How to Drive in the Downpours of Summer

Lindsberg Pettway's Blog | How to Drive in the Downpours of Summer

Summertime rains can happen at any time and cause road conditions to become hazardous quickly. When you least expect it, a gentle summer shower can turn into a monsoon-like event in no time. Ideally, you should try to avoid driving in heavy rains, but sometimes, we know that is just not possible. If you have to be out driving in the rain, I want to keep you safe.  Here is how to be prepared if you find yourself in the middle of a torrential downpour.

  • Slow Down - Drive at a slower speed when confronted with rain. This will allow you to gain more control of your vehicle. A slower speed will also give you more time to react to limited visibility and slippery roads. Initial rain mixes with the oil on the roads and makes them dangerous. After heavy rains, this residue washes off the road but it is then you should be aware of hydroplaning.
  • Take Off Cruise Control – You need to be in complete control of your car in a rainstorm. Cruise control drives your car at the speed you select. If you hit standing water while using cruise control, your car can very easily start to hydroplane. Hydroplaning is when your car loses contact with the road and the tires no longer grip the surface of the road. You feel as if your car is floating. If you find yourself hydroplaning, take your foot off the gas but do not brake suddenly. Steer in a safe direction and let your car come to a complete stop on its own.
  • Don’t Stop Quickly – Braking fast can also cause your car to hydroplane. Road conditions are slippery and can cause your car to slide if you don’t use your brake cautiously.
  • Avoid Roads with Moving Water – A flooded roadway is not the time to tempt Mother Nature. Deep water can wreak havoc on your engine and electrical system. Getting stranded in a heavily flooded roadway can cause your car to stall out and you to be looking for a rescue. Just one foot of water can float some vehicles and two feet of water can sweep vehicles away.
  • Turn on Your Lights – Rainy weather can bring in clouds and dark skies, so turn on those headlights. Don’t forget to use your defrosters to keep fog off your windows and use the fresh-air setting on your AC/Heater.
  • Keep Your Distance – It is always a good idea to keep several cars lengths away from the car in front of you. This will increase your reaction time in case of sudden turns or braking is needed.

There is no shame in pulling over if the rain gets torrential. Always check your local forecast before you hit the road. If you are traveling a long distance, check the forecast for the area you will be driving through and your final destination. Heed all warnings from the National Weather Service and stay safe out there!
